Best of luck Mrs SOD - she'll be grateful of the course change then as last year the final few miles were a right git. Pressure on you for the pacing then

This may become my autumn marathon of choice, given I've realised my first choice of Chester clashes with something else... I was wondering how hilly it is in the first half? Before I do it myself, has anybody plotted the full marathon route here on Fetch?

Nelly. I’ve not done it on here but a mate from the club plotted it out here ridewithgps.com For both the half and full the first mile is flat but then there are a nasty couple of hills up to the Castle and then through the Park Estate. Nothing too drastic and they come where your legs are fresh so when I did the half last year I didn’t lose much time and gained back what I did lose on the downhill along Derby Road. There is then another smaller hill up to Wollaton Hall at 6 miles or so but that is not really anything to worry about. This section accounts for virtually all the 250m elevation gain/loss as it is pretty much pancake flat after that apart from the odd railway bridge. Note that on the plot it came out as 39.9km so expect a minor change to bump the distance up. The first half plotted bang on so any additions will need to be in the second half – they might add a bit of the lake in after all |

Thanks Uyuni. I did RH Marathon back in 2010, so am (vaguely) aware of some of the hills in the first half. I've just plotted it on Fetch (http://www.fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1759456) and it's just less than 25miles, so similar to the 39.9km your mate plotted. Interestingly, according to Fetch, there's less ascent/descent than Chester...

Flatter than Chester - now there's a recommendation and if you are going to have a few hills in a marathon the first 6 miles are far preferable to the last 6. Hope that you make it over |

I've still not entered, but I'm pretty sure I'll be doing the marathon. I've found that the website isn't very helpful... do they still use the Queens Drive Park n Ride? If so, approx. what time would people suggest arriving? I'm trying to work out what time I'd need to set off if I drove down on the morning, or whether a hotel may be needed.
