This article suggests that the procedure was not complete which fits with some of my thoughts that this is a procedure that would be expected to cope with someone trying to escape, eventually giving them no room to move. theguardian.com This was what police call the “containment phase” of the operation. But it was not complete, said one serving firearms commander, who told the Guardian his force would have waited for the containment to be tight before officers rushed out of their cars. This would negate the chance of the vehicle being used as a weapon. However, in Blake’s case that did not happen, with defence barrister Patrick Gibbs KC telling the court the Audi had “far more room to manoeuvre than was safe”. |

@larkim you're arguing for a PR approach. Protesting and campaigning has long moved past the perfect victim. Clearly the perfect victim may get more support but the point is the victim shouldn't have to be perfect for justice.

"and tried to kill police officers with the car" Citation needed. He was simply trying to drive away, no? |

To a degree, yes - my point though is that the cause of demonstrating racism in the police has made no progress, and may actually have had negative progress, as a consequence of this incident being used as a focal point for the protest. |

Also, this makes an interesting link to the cyclists vs cars social media warfare - using language which (rightly) describes the fact that a car can be a deadly weapon I think is important. |

That's a consequence of the actions when trying to escape. In the article I posted the officer couldn't point out a colleague he felt was in danger, however I can't say the fear wasn't real especially when the suggestion is that normally you'd only be on foot once containment had occurred which suggests an situation which would be new and seem out of control. It's clear it was an attempt to escape though and I don't think that would be unexpected in the scenarios that the police would have thought about. And on the point of language comment, the officer that shot Kaba said he didn't intend to seriously harm Kaba in the trial. |

That's not credible - when you shoot at someone intending to hit them with a bullet you intend to seriously harm, surely? He can argue his intention was not to aim at the head, but from back when I studied this stuff I'm pretty sure you'd have to be absolutely rock solid that you were aiming at well below the waist to be able to credibly argue that you weren't risking serious injury which could kill.

Furthermore, most of us would probably classify a bullet through the calf or foot as a serious injury. Especially if we were the recipient! I had a couple of pretty nasty blisters in my early running years...

theguardian.com The prosecution tried to get a lesser charge of manslaughter based on his evidence but that was rejected. "They said Blake’s evidence that he did not intend to cause serious harm “raised the possibility that manslaughter could be left open to the jury” but this argument was rejected by Goss." |
