He was appointed by the Tories after Johnson stuffed him into the HoL for being a (former) labour MP willing to break ranks to vote for his Brexit deal after his marriage to Isabel Hardman (of the now Paul Marshall-owned Spectator).

Why is the Hardman part relevant you may ask. Well Woodcock is another of former remain backers who has swung wildly to the right of British politics after Brexit, which coincidentally was around the same time he married Hardman, who herself despite coming across as v reasonable when she appears on R4 was more than happy to platform hard-to-far views from Douglas Murray et al.
