rf_fozzy, for clarity, no, it was definitely *not* a dig at you. It's very difficult to get nuance across in short online posts. It was just me trying to do a simplified (there's the root of the word again!) summary of my understanding some of the natural contention inherent in capitalism and free market economy and posing the question about whether it was bad and if so what politicians should do about it. All this talk of a safety net. The net these days has many more holes and much less rope, and hence doesn’t provide a lot of safety So, while we're waiting for the balloon to go up, let's try and get someone in charge who will fix the net, rather than someone who will set it on fire. |

Ah, but DG, will the person use the *right sort* of rope to repair it. If it's not blessed by St Jeremy of Corbyn, then it cannot possibly be correct. |

There is a simple (partial) answer to the 2nd homes question, which is that unoccupied houses should be taxed at a higher rate, with unoccupied defined as less than some threshold number of overnight stays. While well-used airbnb and holiday lets are also a bit of a problem when excessive, houses that stand idle for 50 weeks of the year (often because people have inherited them and quite like the idea of a cheap holiday somewhere they have ties to, so they never get round to selling) is a much bigger issue. North Yorks tried to do this recently, but were voted down by the interests of wealthy 2nd home owners, unsurprisingly. They also tried for a very ambitious 10x multiplier on council tax, which was probably too much in one bite. |

If you are going to try to rebalance the housing/2nd home issue using Council Tax, very Conservative and wealthy North Yorkshire is probably not the place to trial it with the electorate! Outside of York and Selby, there's not a lot of non-Conservative political opinion. |

Ah, yes, 3M, but where, apart from London, are you going to find lots of people own second homes that aren't also in areas where they return a Tory to Westminster without thought every five years? There's not that many people own holiday homes in Barnsley, Doncaster or Jarrow. |

There are some libdem outposts around here, but it’s largely blue. I assume the 10x proposal came from a blue council though am not sure of the details. The vote was close though.
