I never read Q, but had periods when I read the other three. Sounds became my regular. Although a bit lightweight the other two I found a tad too serious for their own good especially with the NME trying to be a sort of subversive younger brother to the MM (in the late seventies anyway).
I read NME because it was cool and edgy (or at least that's how it wanted to be viewed). MM covered bands I actually liked. Sounds sort of fell through the gap in the middle for me, but each to their own.
Q was a magazine I would buy occasionally in a train station WHSmiths if I was about to go on a reasonably long journey and I knew I was going to get a bit bored with my book.
