Columba, I have my wife (and she has me) and all three of our children named, each.

Don't think there was slave on the formarket for more than 6!

The trouble with allowing euthanasia is that it has implications which go far beyond a simple choice for individuals, as you can see if you look at some of the things that have happened in the countries (or states, in the USA) which have had it in place for a few years. The Netherlands has slithered a very long way down a slippery slope.

Agreed Columba. I'm told by those people with (early onset) dementia that their good days are still good. How many bad days do you need to have before someone decides that it's time you were gone?

Oh! I had no idea what ‘slave on formarket’ was and was rather worried by it :-o

The consequences of not having euthenasia as an option are pretty unpleasant.

Most families who have more than one welfare PoA are very sensible and make it simple for we providers to consult with one as either the primary decision maker or the spokesperson. If there is a disagreement it makes life more tricky and we have to take more factors into account.

I am opposed to euthanasia for the incapable because in my own case the choice might look like:

a) having a relative who doesn't recognise me spending £1000/week on care, and needing to visit them and finding it time-consuming and distressing
b) being free from the need to care and inheriting a large amount.

I don't trust myself, even though I have no need or wish to inherit anything.

I would wish to get around this by a provision that a person whose family agrees to their euthansia would leave all their estate to charity.

This isnt something I had given much thought to, but my wife received a distressing call from her cousin last night.

Wifes uncle has dementia and has been deteriorating quite a lot of late. Her aunt had a cancer scare a few years ago, but there is now secondary cancer for which there was treatment but big chance of side effects and no guarantee of success. She has decided to decline treatment. She however of course has been struggling to care for her husband who is now doubly incontinent and prone to night time wandering. My Wifes aunt and cousin therefore have taken the plunge to find a care home and that might just give my wifes Aunt one thing less to worry about in the time she has left.

This has really set our minds to work and makes the current health of my MiL and other family challenges seem trivial in comparison. It did make me think though that if I ever ended up like my wifes uncle I wouldnt want to be a burden for those that become responsible for my care or to leave whatever inheritance there may be to be used up to care for me when it might be better used for my children and grandchildren.

My dad has been arguing quite competently (alzheimers in progress) and very consistently that he'd rather be dead and wishes he could arrange it. Both his parents went the same way so he knows the alternative. Money isn't the point and you wouldn't keep a dog alive in that condition. Seems a bit silly to prolong life at all costs, it's not like any of us are going to live for ever anyway.
