Thanks again Weath. I was v tired and grumpy yesterday, so able to concentrate a bit better on what you’ve written today. It’s rubbish with sleep at the moment; otherwise I wouldn’t pursue these issues, but it’s now starting to impact on health. We’ve always lived in a bustling neighbourhood and have been happy to, but things have got just too consistently noisy and the wrong kind of noisy to ignore - constant hums and throbs, as opposed to people singing on way back from pubs and occasional train on the track opposite.

So re: the party. We don’t want to be the fun police either. The establishment in question often has parties starting in the day and finishing about 10 latest on a Sunday evening. It’s an old garage forecourt-type area and they set up a cooking stall too. The music’s good and people from surrounding streets can all hear, but they’ve been fine - nice tunes and music off by 10pm. I’m just probably a bit sensitive that the boundaries are going to be pushed past that time. I think it would cause issues when the kids are back at school - they’re at the junction of 5 residential streets.

Re: the fans - when I popped round to see the businesses, they said their fans went off at 11pm and 12 respectively when they close. The council confirmed this with them. So unless they’ve applied for further permission to keep on all night, they weren’t supposed to do this. I have also been keeping an eye on another fan in the next street - same model - one of those big silver phallic things, except the top’s missing. It’s really blowy and noisy but does go off when the restaurant shuts at 10pm.

I’m gonna wait until my housemate (friend and owner) is back from working abroad and then sort out with him what we need to do and use your info, Weath. In the meantime, I have updated the council officer who arranged the visit. Thanks again.

Events have overtaken my housemate coming back a bit. The council sent me a noise app link and I have been recording the industrial machinery noise at various times. They came back to me after 4 recordings on the app, which has cases that you set up and that are shared with the council. The council caseworker agrees the noise is very apparent. She also said that they are investigating the premises for other issues and may have to set an enforcement order if conditions are not met. The area around the take-aways has been minging - all sorts of crap in the gutters and outside the various premises. There’s also an issue with double-parking. This has been an issue in the past, but with the increase in cars locally and in particular inappropriate Chelsea tractors for the inner city; visibility on what is a busy corner, is compromised. Some of my pals have remarked on the increase in double-parking when they are walking, driving or cycling by. All in all - hazards all round. … and as for fire safety … I’m also going to ask the council officer when I meet with her, how they’d combat a fire round the back on their flat roofs with all the machinery up there and no visible back access.

Debris in our back garden is an ongoing issue too - blowing in off the flat roof. I’ll probably throw that in, so the council get a rounded overview of lack of respect for residential neighbours.

The noise continues and has got worse. I’m at my wit’s end.

Hey Mrs Jigs (Luverlylegs). Thanks for checking. Update is that my work colleague had a good idea about how to soften the noise. I put a wardrobe of the wood and cloth variety in front of the window and filled it with more clothes, topped with lots of cushions and pillows. Not a long-term solution, but at least it's dulled some of the noise. No natural light in the bedroom how and no way to open the window to ventilate.

In the interim, the noise still goes on. My housemate and I have been over to talk to offending business and I ended up getting a number for the manager and calling him. He gave me some rubbish about new parts being delayed by Christmas.

The council investigators are coming round on Saturday at midnight to check the noise, as the business have not sorted it and they had a letter from the council last year asking them to do this.

Finally, a new noise has started. It's like a soft revving. At first I thought it was a loud snorer. If you go into the garden at night, it's impossible to tell where it's coming from. It's everywhere and nowhere! Unfortunately we back on to take-aways and shops and they're also to the left. Effectively we're an island between a railway track and another street with a tiny park at one end. Unfortunately, our little street is marooned with all the take-aways, cafes, shops and their noisy devices.

Thanks for the update Red Squirrel, sounds just as frustrating as ever, the temporary action on your part is going to be difficult when the warmer weather comes if you are unable to get fresh air into the room, hoping the council will take any necessary action, and quickly 🤞

The council have upped their visits and seem to be fully focused on the problem now. My housemate sent a recording he took at 01:00 this morning - to me and to the council person. It was very loud!! The shop still haven’t fixed the problem, but the recording was the best yet as it highlighted the constant noise at a ridiculous time from a bedroom window. Hopefully they can go an kick some ass now.

Glad you’re finally getting some traction, I hope it gets sorted.

About This Thread

Maintained by Red Squirrel
Hey good peeps of Fetch - can you help me (and housemate-owner) where fruitless searches of t’internet have not?

We live in a house with small back garden backing and siding on roads with shops and takeaways. Recently a new take-away has opened and another one re-opened. If you go into the back garden any time of day or night, it sounds like a wind tunnel. I’ve had to move from my back bedroom to my living room (I rent 2 rooms) because it’s too loud and vibrating to sleep at night. ...
