However it is only a 17 mile run to work and then I'm planning a trip via west wickham station (southeastern) and a few miles on the vanguard way to get home tomorrow. Wednesday could be interesting though

AL, my son had a fairly bad experience with an "apprenticeship" but he was paid. IIRC it was offered him as "paid work experience" with the understanding that it was expected to carry on after the end of the first month.
Mind you, he had to do an aptitude test before the interview, something fairly complex in Excel, and he asked a friend rather than noticing that he wasn't fitted to the role.
