I had a pleasant chat with the Talktalk helpdesk this morning. I couldn't do as he asked (unscrew the cover on the box where our phone line splits between the router and the phone) because I had to get off to my strengthening class.
The problem seems fixed now so that would have been an unnecessary step anyway.

I have replaced the batteries in the TV remote.

The old ones were flat, so it wasn't working.
