Glenn I like your pithy distinction between a therapeutic and an athletic marathon.

I suspect we are talking about psycho-social therapy rather than physiotherapy here. Whatever the nature of the therapy, from does still matter. The major reason for concern about form when running is maximising the chance that all runs are more therapeutic than pathological

Working on form should not be at the expense of key things like weight loss and strength training though - otherwise its just wallpapering over the cracks.

My marathon wava is better than all shorter distances, at least it was after I ran my last marathon and I confidently expect it will be again in 2 weeks.

So do I. TBH I think form can be worked on by being mindful in your actual runs.

The obsession of the masses with distance is summed up by 5k and 10k being seen as short, lol. Always makes me laugh when I see some refer to 5k as a sprint.

It's all about perception and normalisation, and what end of the telescope you view life from?

I think one of the most effective ways to improve performance for recreational runners is for them to shed any excess weight.

But does excess weight directly translate to poor/inefficient running technique?

Fenners. I meant just in performance gain -reducing race times, more so as the distance increases

Totally agree, and is the biggest factor when people improve dramatically. If you go from 16 stone to 10 stone it ain't rocket science that jettionising 6 stone will result in improved performance.
