Agree with you flanker the Black Sail descent at night can be tricky.

It can, but I am the world's most cautious descender and with practice I'm now able to get down it comfortably if not at all quickly.

What's the conventional wisdom here as regards footwear choice for the 100 as far as Dalemain? I was considering the route and thinking that a more aggressive shoe might be a good idea if it's a bit soft underfoot, maybe x-claws. I'll probably move into a more cushioned ultra shoe from Dalemain.

I would suggest, from a personal point of view having never done more than 65ish miles but wearing the same kind of shoe, wear whatever works for you.

I know that doesn't help, but kit choice is an individual thing. There is no one size fits all way of doing it.

I was sort of looking for what others might have done on the day. Some of the ground early on in the 100 can be a bit boggy.

This year I wore roclites, changing into a fresh but otherwise identical pair at Dalemain.

I've tried the 'more grippy shoe to start then change into cushioned ultra shoe' 3 times (twice at the 100, once at UT110km) and it has been a bad idea every time so I'm sticking with trusty roclites for everything now.

Which roclites Kinky? have you tried the new ones yet?

not running obviously, but looking into the logistics for volunteering for the next yr or two.

(and I need some new winter shoes, roclites 280s did not suit, missing my old fallen apart 315s)

I'm using 295s at the moment, before that I had good results with 268s (which were basically the women's version of the unisex 295, now long obsolete I think). I've not tried the new ones yet but they are getting good reviews.

My very first pair of trail shoes were 315s :-)
