My mother just turned in her grave :)
We were told to read books or play with the lego.
We would also be taken out for wet walks!

Indoor footgolf. Played with a small ball, no larger than a tennis ball*. Tee off in one corner of the house and get your ball to the 'hole' in another distant part of the floor. Play the course in reverse for a second hole. Work out a par. Skilled players use deflections of walls and furniture to get through doors, but look out for hazards such as "underneath the cooker" or "in the dog." Lost balls can be retrieved at the cost of a penalty stroke.

*balled up socks can be used, but lack the bounciness preferred by top players, even those with a high lycra content. N.B. too much bounciness can be as bad as too little.

I love the foot golf and saucepan ping pong ball ideas. I used my crochet foam blocking mats to make stepping stones. Get from a to b without stepping on the carpet (or climbing on the furniture

Ah, yes, we did that too: Ouwehands Dierenpark. They had a dolphin show, indoors. Highly popular but these days considered cruel.

Sounds like a day out, rather than a game though :-)

HowFar?
I spent many happy hours playing book cricket. Assign each letter to an event, e.g. a dot ball, a score or an appeal for a type of out.

Pick a random line and number of letters, e.g. 17th letter on the 7th row.

Turn to any page and check what the letter is.

You can have the appeal as an out automatically or repeat the process as above and only have the appeal turn into an out of the letter you land on is a vowel.

I played many a test match between England and West Indies that way (In the terrifying but thrilling Garner, Roberts, Holding, Marshall era)

Before the days of football manager I used to simulate a football season using dice. I'd have a league of 12 teams, generally from London and surrounds and play a season and a cup competition. There were two different coloured die, red for the home team and white for the away. I'd roll them to get the score. If it came up as something like a 3 and a 1 I'd take that as the score. More unlikely scores such as a 6 and a 4 would generally get adjusted to be 3-2. Double 6 was a 0-0. I'd let the occasional 6-1 through but generally these would get reduced to something like 5-0, 6-5 to 1-0. In theory the whole season's competition should be quite close, but it was strange how some team's would have good or bad seasons, or go on good/bad runs.

I played a similar Fantasy F1 games. This involved pulling pieces of paper out of bowls. One would have the driver's name on, the other their outcome in the race (i.e. 1st, 4th, crashed, retired, out of the points)...

I was an only child.

Oh, and I played cricket matches with dice too using the Howzat rules

1=1 run
2=2 runs
3=3
4=4
5=Howzat
6=6

After a howzat appeal it was something along these lines (I can't remember exactly)

1= bowled
2= caught
3= LBW
4= Stumped
5= not out
6= run out

I thought it'd be fun (plus I know someone who might enjoy hearing some creative ideas) to collect your suggestions for games to play with kids on a rainy day. Ideally, the games would be with minimal equipment, or common household items. I'll give you some to get you started:

We had a set of 10 plastic pint glasses for some reason, and the Boy and I managed to come up with some fun games involving those e.g. see how many you can balance one on top of another before they fall over; ...
