Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I don't disagree with how either of you read this situation & agree that these are guidelines at the moment. To add to this - possibly like Tim - I don't live in a particularly densely populated area. My real fear is that if we all disregard the plea for voluntary restraint and the government bring in tighter controls like some other countries and we're not allowed out at all for exercise, it would be a whole lot worse than the 'once a day' sacrifice.

The police did actually do a 'drive by' when my wife and I were walking on the beach. There was us and another family about 300 metres away. The police were off in seconds.

My running has been going fine, and probably like everyone, it's all of a sudden become a valuable reason to get out in fresh air.

Though I'm missing Park run and the chance to enter races.

One of my routes goes round a lake leading to a park in a suburban area. Some local residents on a FB page have complained about runners using the path around the lake, and how they have little consideration for anyone walking, pushing buggies etc, not keeping to 2 meters etc. Someone even claimed that it was us runners spreading Covid 19, as we are "spraying it" everywhere from our breath.

So I now feel slightly anxious on that route, in case someone criticises me. Though in reality, I'm a considerate runner I feel, so no one ever has.

Never was a problem a few weeks ago.

I'm a bit paranoid because I have 2 dogs that I normally take out 2 to 3 times a day, so they are down to once a day, but I now also have my Dad's dog because he is in hospital, so can I still get a run in because I am taking a vulnerable person's dog out ? Dad is 86 ?

SCP - that's interesting that runners are seen as part of the problem, spreading CV wider. It only takes one runner to be too close, to create a bad impression. And because we're moving faster and through the walkers, it is true that our chance of contact is higher.

I'm like Gg I'm in an area where I see almost no one. I wouldn't choose to run in or near a park or other relatively busy area. Stay safe all. :-) G

About This Thread

Maintained by Canute
Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise exponentially in the UK.

It is even more crucial to do everything we can to slow the rate of onset of new cases. Nonetheless, exercise remains important for our health.

The relevant piece of the legislation in England is:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020

Restrictions on movement

6.—(1) During the emergency period, no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a reasonable excuse includes the need—

(a) to obtain basic necessities, including food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) or for vulnerable persons and supplies for the essential upkeep, maintenance and functioning of the household, or the household of a vulnerable person, or to obtain money, including from any business listed in Part 3 of Schedule 2;

(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

-----
That is an abbreviated version. Here is a link to a more comprehensive specification of section 6:
legislation.gov.uk

Similar regulations apply in Scotland, where section 8, (5) (b) states:
(b) to take exercise, either alone or with other members of their household.
In Northern Ireland, section 5 (2) (b) is the same:
(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

In Wales, the regulations state that you can leave the house no more than once a day for exercise, The relevant section [section 8] states:

(b) to take exercise, no more than once a day, either alone or with other members of the household.

-----------

Here is a link to the guidance regarding a reasonable excuse to leave the house, issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (for England):

Note added 26th May: unfortunately the clear guidelines issued in April have been taken down and replaced by a more complex collection of documents.
-------------

The fact that the government accepts the importance of exercise places a responsibility on us to exercise in a way that reduces our risk of becoming a clinical case rather than increasing our risk.

Here is a review of the factors that influence the relationship between exercise and function of the immune system
