Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

As I am not going to take a rest day until restrictions are lifted I am going to alternate between a long walk one day and a run/walk. Aiming for an hour on my feet, sometimes I miss time it as I try different routes.

Aaach.
Glorious sun, strong winds and snow to finish. Makes an otherwise mundane run just now slightly more satisfying :-)

This morning, my wife asked me to go for a walk with her on the beach.

Later, I went for my normal afternoon run.

On neither outing did I get remotely close to anyone from outside my household.

Yet I felt guilty for kerping myself healthy.

I'm only going out for a walk with my wife or daughter if I haven't already 'used up' the exercise pass with an earlier run or bike ride.

It's possible that no-one would ever know if I did as the back door & front door are on separate streets … but I'm just grateful that we're not on total lockdown & want to stick to the rules as much as I can.

It is a real grey area though.

According to Scottish COVID regulations, which are the law of the land, no-one is limited to a single outdoor exercise session per day. Nor is there any restriction on the length of any exercise session.

The "rules" that you speak of aren't the law. They're individual ministers' own views.

I agree, Tim. And despite the ambiguous statements of ministers, you should not feel any guilt about keeping healthy. In fact that is what we should be doing to minimse risk of being a drain on health service resources. We need to exercise reasonable sensitivity to the feelings of our neighbours but accompanying you wife for a walk on the beach and then a run without impinging on others seems reasonable to me.

About This Thread

Maintained by Canute
Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise exponentially in the UK.

It is even more crucial to do everything we can to slow the rate of onset of new cases. Nonetheless, exercise remains important for our health.

The relevant piece of the legislation in England is:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020

Restrictions on movement

6.—(1) During the emergency period, no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a reasonable excuse includes the need—

(a) to obtain basic necessities, including food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) or for vulnerable persons and supplies for the essential upkeep, maintenance and functioning of the household, or the household of a vulnerable person, or to obtain money, including from any business listed in Part 3 of Schedule 2;

(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

-----
That is an abbreviated version. Here is a link to a more comprehensive specification of section 6:

Similar regulations apply in Scotland, where section 8, (5) (b) states:
(b) to take exercise, either alone or with other members of their household.
In Northern Ireland, section 5 (2) (b) is the same:
(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

In Wales, the regulations state that you can leave the house no more than once a day for exercise, The relevant section [section 8] states:

(b) to take exercise, no more than once a day, either alone or with other members of the household.

-----------

Here is a link to the guidance regarding a reasonable excuse to leave the house, issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (for England):

Note added 26th May: unfortunately the clear guidelines issued in April have been taken down and replaced by a more complex collection of documents.
-------------

The fact that the government accepts the importance of exercise places a responsibility on us to exercise in a way that reduces our risk of becoming a clinical case rather than increasing our risk.

Here is a review of the factors that influence the relationship between exercise and function of the immune system
