I saw some bunting on my way to parkrun this morning. Outside a Turkish barber of all places.

I'm a scientist and a non-believer. Another great thread to hang out on.

But Homer, he's only King because God ordains it so. That's why he's anointed with holy oil. It's a sacred pact between the King and God. Religion and Monarchy have been inextricably linked for 1000+ years.

In fact, I'll correct that. Monarchy and Christianity have been inextricably linked for all that time. Monarchy and religion has always been linked.

Ah yes, I forgot the holy oil...changes everything :-)

(though listening to thousands of Roman, Constantine and dark ages history teaches you the importance of the 'perception of power')

Did you watch Game Of Thrones Homer? Tyrion’s riddle about the rich man, the king and the soldier, and who has the power.

I do remember that one Nellers.

I'll be happier when they get back to being nice to people at garden parties and waving from balconies. But for now I need to make the pledge of allegiance

57.5 Degrees of Pain
If memory serves, anointing was all about 8th or 9th century Anglo Saxon kings trying to cement their family's hold on power.

"It was god wot done it, serf. Can't argue with that!".

Not quite a forward looking idea for the 21st century.

The whole day of eye wateringly expensive mumbo jumbo was easy to ignore in western Botswana at least!
