Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

The calc doesn't ask for that input, only age and resting.

It estimates a Max heart rate of 181.

My recent Max HR (self tested/chest strap) is 184, which I think is low. Got to 183 doing 600m repeats this week.

Chest strap is new though, multiple recordings of 190+ via the watch in June, peaking for a 5k effort.

Might do a 5k effort on Saturday

Sorry 5k effort was 197MHR but I'm wary of watch data.

Sorry but I know the formula so you want your own max HR or the numbers are wrong

I must admit I wont trust the watch with a strap for anything beyond resting data so would redo with 184, however 184 - 181 not hugely out

However if you want to redo

184 - RHR *0.6 + RHR etc...

I believe Garmin can set these zones. Certainly my FR230 can.

What's your firm advice for establishing maxHR Gobi? If the weather holds out OK tonight I've got a decent slot to do "something", and as I've repeatedly posted that I don't know what my max is, it would make a lot of sense to use that time wisely and actually establish it!

SPR - it can but that doesnt mean I agree with the numbers

3 to 5 1 min efforts up a hill

No rest after the effort , you turn and jog straight back down then go again , maximum time between effort no more than 2 mins

Got you. That calculator asks for actual Resting Heart Rate but uses 220-Age rather than Actual Maximum Heart Rate.

My top of Zone 1 at [((184-50)*0.60)+50] is going to be 130. Zone 2 will be 144.

Thanks for that, good to know my recent slower efforts have been at the bottom of Zone 2 and not the bottom of Zone 3. Hopefully Zone 1 will be in scope soon.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
