Perhaps women have a way of keeping the offending technical fabric(s) from coming directly in to contact with the HRM strap? ;-)

I nominate HOD as the volunteer to go for a test run with a pair of comedy fake breasts under his T-shirt.

HOD does that anyway Paul.

There have been comments from women in the past about erratic readings. May depend on fabric, number of layers and ...er... amount of movement.

I've had the same problems in the past with my Garmin straps giving excessively high readings particularly for the first mile or so of a run. I've always found that tightening the strap rectifies the problem as it seems to have worked itself loose over time.

never had a problem with chest straps unless the strap has stretched and the sensor has slipped down from ideal position. So, just like Rog T...and me...tighten up!
Does any other veteran worry about going beyond safe heart maximum for too long (or maybe at all) or is it just me?!

I didn't worry until the last few weeks when godknows how many rock and rollers of my era started to die!! Still intend to check my max HR !!

I was getting fed up with HR spikes with my Garmin soft strap HRM, which have started to occur far more recently. On looking into it, I find that it's pretty common once the strap's a few months old, and the consensus seems to be that it's caused by the build up salts or something in the fabric, allowing some kind of electrical contact to occur across the area just behind the clip. The radical solution proposed is to actually chop a chunk out of the strap, about 1cm across, in the area behind the clip. I've done that and haven't seen a spike since, but I'll report back after I've done some more testing.

I worry that I'm in decline Gobi! I did my test this morning and may max HR 170 is four less than it was NINE years ago! Will be checking my resting HR and hope that that's fallen so that my overall zone figures remain at roughly the same--otherwise my runs are going to be much too slow for enjoyment.
