Just looking for options for SmallFry who is 8 and a half and who seems increasingly to have hayfever at this time of year.

When I first got meds on prescription it was Piriton syrup (2 mg Chlorphenamine Maleate), then we got Boots own (same stuff), now they give us Chlorphenamine tablets (4mg).

How am I supposed to get the tablets down the SmallFry without resorting to crushing them with honey? Or putting them in his mouth and shaking him while holding his mouth firmly closed (as I would do to the cat). Should I just ask for syrup instead?

The syrup costs more, thats why
Cant see why you cant crush the tablets either
Or ask GO to prescrube syrup if small fry cant take pills

It's sugar. You don't get children's meds with sugar anymore 'cos it is bad for their teeth, never mind the condition they've got.

you can still get piriton syrup

and honey is sugar too, so that kinda defeats the object

If the poor little thing cant take pills then he needs syrup

the tablets are tiny and slip down easily in a spoon of yogurt
alternatives include cetirizine which has the advantage of being only once a day. Dose for an 8 year old is 10 mg which is one tiny tablet or 2 x 5ml spoons of incredibly foul tasting medicine.
All 4 of mine have been made to swallow tablets from the age of about 6 as i'm too mean to pay for Calpol and bulk buy paracetamol tablets instead! It really is no different to swallowing a pea or bit of sweetcorn.

How about hiding them in a bit of sausage then? Is what we do for the dog. He loves it ;-)

You can get less sedating hayfever medicines for children, in sugar-free syrup form. They only need to be given once a day and don't taste unpleasant. Ask the pharmacist for advice, and ask your GP for a prescription if the cost makes you wince.
