Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

A long overdue wedding anniversary present to see Duran Duran last night. They were still good and most importantly Mrs J enjoyed it.

It’s very rare I’d go to a big gig like that and especially one that attract people of, well, my age.

I go to tons of gigs where I am probably in the top 5% of oldest people there, I get into mosh pits and go daft with the kids, and I very rarely see a spot of bother or lack of respect to me or anyone else.

But go to a gig with a crowd made up of people 45+, especially at a weekend and it’s just awful. It’s like it’s a one off weekend away and people don’t know how to behave. I know, I should know better, it was a Friday night gig in Scarborough but the MO for most seemed to be.

1. Get to town early and get on the beer, no time tk waste
2. Ignore all the pre covid warnings and then stand at the front of the queue banging on about your rights and how you can’t find the app on your phone.
3. Get in and make sure you buy at least 8 pints to save queuing and then make sure everybody makes way for you.
4. Dodge the support and then decide that actually you’d like to be near the front and balls to everyone who’s been waiting patiently for two hours.
5. Once you’ve barged through and got your spot, make sure you then turn around and shout ‘Colin’ at least 50 times. Then call him and explain you’re in the crowd near the front.

6. Realising that the band are not about to come on decide it’s time for another drink so barge back out.

7. Shit music is starting, get back in and immediately hold your phone as high above your head as you can to record it.
8. Repeat for every song, but only the ones you know.
9. When they play a new song, get to the bar quick, new songs are always shit.
10. If you can’t make it to the bar, be sure to shout very loudly at Colin and then keep take some videos of the crowd and you and Colin gurning.

The kids are alright, it’s the old people who don’t know how to behave at gigs. (Not all old people obvs).

I tend to sing very loudly and off-key near peoples phones when they do that :-)

and you'll hate me, 'cos Ive seen my favourite band so many times I can't be bothered with support bands, so I'm one of those who just go to the front 10 mins before they come on. no barging though, just a polite 'excuse me, just trying to get to the moshpit' usually works (and it helps that I'm only 5'1" :-) )

I must be getting old - I'm trying to remember the last gig I went to that had a moshpit. I suspect stage-diving at Tindersticks or Low would look more like a cry for help...

(the idea that The Yout' Of Today are better behaved than their forebears is definitely true, though. Not gig-related but 90% of rude, careless behaviour I see in public around here is from pensioners.)

Not at all fragile, unless you’re trying to balance 14 pints and want to leave to go to the bar every 8 minutes.

An awful lot of my favourite bands have been found as support on toured of other people I’ve watched.

Oh Christ, Joopsy...I'm due to see them next year at the rescheduled Hyde Park gig (bucket list-was a huge Durannie as a child and still like them), I hope Colin and his missus aren't there!
Sort of reminded me of a Prodigy gig a few years ago. A woman with a huge designer handbag over her arm like Margaret Thatcher and an even bigger bouncer style boyfriend barged right up to the front just before the main act came on. She didn't appear to have any interest in the music, didn't like being jostled by the others dancing around her, just occasionally pouted into a selfie on her phone while her boyfriend barked at anyone with a beer to mind her bag...

Haha...love a pint usually, but the beer at gigs is usually a bit questionable. Last one I had before the C word struck was at Norwich University...eggy, gassy and served in warm plastic 🤢
