Keegan in 2000. It was what the fans wanted.

You're probably right there.

I might be misremembering but Keegan was awful. But he essentially provided exactly the way he promised he would do and it's hard to fault him for that. And stood down in similar fashion.

I went to the last Keegan game. 0-1 vs Germany, the rain had hammered down all day and we were indescribably awful. Last game at the ‘Old’ Wembley IIRC, and didn’t Keegan quit whilst on the toilet.

At least he had the nous to recognise he was completely out of his depth and stepped aside. A year later: Germany 1 England 5. Bet we can all remember where we were for that game…..

Yes, we went into Nottingham for a meal with the in-laws. It was 1 - 1 when we left the house. Had no idea what was happening in the taxi, driver wouldn't put it on. First pub we went in had no telly, so still no idea. By the time we got into the second pub, it was 1 - 5 and people were literally dancing on the tables.

I have a vivid memory of watching that first game of Euro 2000 v Portugal with Keegan's gung-ho attacking style of play. We were 2-0 up in about 15 minutes and lost it 3-2, and it was all downhill from there. Finished 3rd in the group and straight home, but it was the FA bowing to pressure and giving the public what they (said they) wanted, which I guess they did want until they started losing again.

As ever, Southgate is going to get stick for his style of play until he wins again, then he's a world-beating genius and we'll never lose again against anyone, until we do when he's a dummy again, and repeat until he resigns.

I wonder if you went into the News House. I was in Nottm visiting my mate so was out watching it. Sven was getting interviewed on the TV, so we put a chair under the TV and people were getting up and kissing the TV :)

Oh those days of caring about England THAT much........

Just googled it and in my despair at England's performance I'd completely missed that Germany finished bottom of our group, so the 5-1 soon after shouldn't have been a complete surprise!

Those Euros were after my university finals. Bought large crate of beer and watched most of them very drunk with beers chilling in cold water in my bin. My final dregs of money and won £75 on an early treble on something like Italy, ... and a very late Dutch penalty.

Was back visiting friends at university for Keegan's final match so was in the North-East for both his resignation from England, as I had for university visit when he sensationally quit Newcastle.

I watched the 5-1 match in a terrible pub in Bradford city centre.

As a footnote, despite the 5-1 Germany did get to the 2002 WC, and of course reached the final.

And despite us qualifying ahead of them it only came about in 90whateverth minute thanks to Beckham's goal against Greece.

Kind of both prove you can't win tournaments with single matches.

Ah, the beautiful game, remember that? Let's put down some jumpers and have a socially-distanced kickabout. Long shots only, and no hugging and kissing.
