Though delighted if Ashley is gone - not entirely comfortable with saudi takeover of Newcastle - though I can see the benefits of investment to the club, city & region - however the fuss is interesting though: - didn't hear the human rights noises when Man City were bought by a similar state - no problems with sports washing when the same Saudis sponsor ManU for years and have links - Sheffield United were owned by one of the other Saudi princes recently I believe - again no fuss I noticed - Plenty teams have similar Arab states or state agencies as sponsors - again no fuss You'll forgive Newcastle fans for being a bit cynical about the contrast and considering it hypocrisy Anybody rich enough to bankroll a premier League club these days has probabably got a significant dark side. I'd happily back rules restricting ownership and sponsorship so long as applied evenly to all. I do like that a couple of Jewish businessmen are in with the Saudis too - that seems a bit of a positive to me |

Not a close follower of English football but even I have seen column inches devoted to the ethics of Man City ownership.

You decide whether it's inches or pages. 'Column inches' is a term for 'space in the papers' as far as I am aware. theguardian.com independent.co.uk There are more. I've no axe to grind but you can't say City haven't been covered for their ownership's human rights issues |

There has been constant criticism of Man City, some of which has been on this thread.

It's reassuring to see that whataboutery is not just a Scottish football phenomenon.

I’d also make a distinct difference between a sponsorship deal and actually being state owned. I don’t think Newcastle fans are acting any differently to the way most fans would, but it’s odd that there appears to be no dissenting voices at all. |

Decent point some coverage on city's owners ethics in recent years but arguably different to trying to prevent ownership at time of purchase Anything similar for the other owners I mentioned, or sports washing sponsorships ? There may well be and they have passed me by, however Newcastle seems to be national news and the story I get on BBC is about Amnesty's campaign rather than about the takeover itself. I bet there's not much negative about ManU's Saudi state sponsorship deals from 2008-2020 |

See above comment Cog. If I look on Twitter there seems to be a proper display of victim mentality from the geordies who clearly think they get a raw deal because of who they are. I’d really like to see Newcastle prosper, I went to a few games when Jim Smith was manager and I was spending a lot of time there. I’d just like it not t ok be at the cleansing of a very disturbing regime. Whilst your point is valid about United there have been a number of demonstrations on March days regarding the Saudi ties as part of the anti glazer movement. |

Hypothetical situation: What if the Taliban bought a football club? Probably not an English Premier club - Rotherham United or Leyton Orient, say? |
