I didn't watch much of that 2001 match, we were taking the in laws out for dinner and missed most of the match in a taxi and two pubs that weren't showing the game. By the time we got to a third pub that had the football on, it was 5 - 1 and the place was full of drunken, disbelieving folk dancing on tables.

I was in Edinburgh that night. Bar staff poured themselves a whiskey when England went a goal down, and threw me out just after the 5th one went in :-)

I was in a bar next to Paddington station ready to jump on said train at full time...

It was also the night that I heard the (slightly bizarre and definitely offensive) chant...
With his packet of sweets
And chicken in foil
Rudi Voeler is a P....phile

As I said, allied with the cricket that day, it was one of the all time great days and I got home just in time (royally pie-eyed) to watch the cricket highlights at about 1am!!

I have seen England play Germany twice, 1982, we lost 1-2, then 2000, when we lost 0-1, we're going to get beaten in a really horrible game, in a really crap way.

I have seen us beat the Germans in a Euros tournament.

Still a bit deaf from sitting one row in front of the England band in Charleroi when Shearer scored in front of us.

It was on the day that my brother-in-law got married and my 8 month pregnant wife was on her own that day. How did I get away with that one?

So the scientific conclusion is that we never beat Germany except when we do?

I'm trying to think what would be genuinely unexpected ...

Germany get an early penalty - and miss. Pickford brought the man down, but only gets a yellow. On around the half hour, a massive barney breaks out and two from each side are sent off. Nil-nil at halftime.

Early in the second, Pickford suffers a bizarre injury (headbutts post perhaps) and goes off. Replacement keeper drops ball, German misses from four yards. Against the run of play, England score. German players are at each others throats.

Still half an hour to go, though: don't know how it ends.

... a genuinely unexpected outcome tonight, a Scotland win.

I can see Pickford headbutting a post.

Ah, the beautiful game, remember that? Let's put down some jumpers and have a socially-distanced kickabout. Long shots only, and no hugging and kissing.
