Yes, you're both in Yorkshire Water territory.
Have to say, in normal times, they're fairly straightforward to deal with - there's forms to fill in etc, but normally far fewer hassles than the ones I've heard people have had to deal with UU.
But, along with many other organisations, they've gone very risk averse in case something happens (as I say somewhat understandably) at the moment, which is a little frustrating, but totally understandable. I can't really criticise them too much.
I'd guess that when restrictions start being relaxed again, then it'll be possible to have a dialogue with them about return to using their areas, but for the time being, not allowed.

I've actually been surprised YW haven't closed the many permissive paths over their land in recent months. They've put up signs but left them open.
Which puts them in a far better light than a number of local farmers with "closed" RoW across their land

"also said no organised events at all on their land"
Disorganised events would be ok though?

The fell races I help with are very organised, DT!
Well, they are by the time we get things moving. I know where the disorganisation lies and try to plan accordingly!
I sometimes do wonder if *some* people who organise events do realise they need formal permissions to use access land/public land (e.g. parks) for events (either profit or non-profit). I get the impression that, while the vast majority of ROs do, there are a few that don't always do things quite by the book!
This impression is purely an impression and not supported by any particular evidence. So I may well be wrong.

No, I think you're right Fozzy. The one time my own club tried to put on an off-road face it was a cataclysmic f*ck-up, mainly caused by the guy pushing it and him not realising the need for permission from the land owners. I was dead against it and it was a terrible route.

Agree fozzy. I know I've run events where the RO definitely hasn't had permission to race over some of the course. They seem to erroneously think public RoW extend to participants in organised events.

Yes, that's one I've seen too Flanker, and is what has made me doubt that everyone does things properly.
I've definitely heard things along the lines of: "oh it's all on public footpaths, so we don't need permission" - which is not true.
And of course, there's now the added complication that in some areas, Natural England needs to sign off too (which is the a very bureaucratic system) and I'm not certain that this always being done. But I think the FRA is now specifying things more clearly and explicitly have to be done before the race permit is issued.
I do think that this is *some* of the issue with some landowners being (at times) difficult to obtain permission from.
This all said, I wasn't aware of half the issues until I started orienteering and getting involved in organising events.

Go and see the landowners well before your race and promise to take them bottles of commemorative beer round after the event. You do commission your local micro-brewery to brew beer for your races don’t you fozzy? 🍺
