Bum bag here too. I have 2 oldish inov8 ones which are pretty good, but the models change all the time, and a bigger lightweight terra nova, which has been great, but is big.

I also have an omm one, which I've had for ages, with massive capacity, but at the tightest setting, is still too big for me.

I've got an OMM Ultra (the yellow one) bumbag that I use most of the time - it's big enough for jacket, trousers, hat, gloves, buffs, map (it has a special pocket in the back of the waistband for one), compass, food and has a loop for a bottle, so it's pretty good.

That's why I prefer it to the Pete Bland one.

I've also got the OMM last drop 10l rucksack that I've been known to use if I need to carry extra baselayers and stuff as well.

The downside is that this can bounce around a bit - the waist strap has no padding and you can't do it too tight. It will take a bladder though and it's a bit better with one as it sits a bit lower.

For Mountain Marathons, I use a Osprey Talon 22 (although I need a new one). I prefer this over lighter OMM/Inov8 versions because the back is structured and fits me really well. This also takes a bladder.

I use a running vest (Ultimate Direction), I wasn't convinced to begin with but they are brilliant, a little bit fiddly when you very first fit it, but once that's sorted they are brilliant, no bounce, more easy access to water and food, depending on size you can fit all relevant gear in. I find bum bags awkward now.

I presume the big plus for a bum bag is that you can lift out a waterproof jacket and put it on without having to take off the bag, whereas a vest or back pack have to come off?

That's spot on lark---im.

I have three bumbags (full range of sizes) and two rucksacks/vests. The bumbags are always there for short races - for the convenience of getting anything quickly and without breaking stride.

The Vest is for ultras and longer mountain days where more kit has to be carried and the faff of taking it off and getting things out has to be put up with in terms of carrying the extra volume of kit. The rucksack is about ten years old now (when the new-fangled vest things were but a figment of the imagination) but is good for days out. Oh, most of that is Innov8, plus Montane for the vest.

Anyone here have kids that take part in the FRA Championships? My club has been asked to put on the second race of the series and we've just received permission from the NT and landowners to go ahead:

Well, we sort of have done :-) We thought about putting one on up in Nidderdale, but it's too remote. Nobody would come.
