Good game MB1.
I'm on a losing streak but enjoying the experience.

Finally I think I'm seeing some improvement in my game. I have been trying to take in a bit of 'opening strategy' theory the past week, which is far more advanced than just the basic pin/skewer beginners type stuff that I hadn't really bothered to delve further than since the age of about 10.
With this newly acquired knowledge, rather than just making 'mechanical' responses to certain moves, I'm starting to look at the wider picture - starting to consider things like 'pawn islands', having no need to use the queen too early, taking towards the center, moving a piece only once during the early stages, looking for discovered attacks more often than previously etc. All no doubt obvious to the more advanced players on here but a bit of a revelation as to how much difference it can immediately make to your game from this novices' perspective.
After a horrible run of defeats prior to deciding I needed to up my game somewhat; I am currently on a wining streak of 11 from 13 in 10 minute games (and I most likely would have won one of the loses as well if my finger hadn't have slipped on the app and I missed capturing a queen by one square ... 😡). Managed to win my last game without even moving my queen in the 24 moves!
Still bimbling around the mid-600 for a 'Rapid' rating but I actually feel as though I've embarked on an upward trajectory this time instead of just 'playing' and grabbing the statistically probable occasional win when you drop beneath a certain level. This game is now actually starting to become addictive.
Just as a note - has anyone one else noticed the price difference on subs between signing up on the app/web? Gold (monthly) web = £3.99 cf. £4.79 app - just in case this is of use to anyone.

That’s interesting Weath.
Now I’ve played a few real people and gone back to the beginner computers I’m finding they’re not playing at all like a real person and making many mistakes! I’m much more considered against a real person too, I’m more likely to lose pieces to the computer!
I did watch a few things about opening, but I’m at a bit of a loss how to progress from developing my pieces of I’m playing a similar player!
I’m currently playing Joophy (I think) who is clearly winning and I can’t see a way out, but I’m managing to hold him off. However soon I might have to play suicide chess or it could go on for ages.

I’m having a really good game against Quimby. I got a bit carried away early on and attacked too soon.

I still don't know what I'm doing. I seem to be doing well, then an unexpected move that I hadn't seen coming from an opponent gets me on the back foot. I look at the opponent's game as if it is me playing and they clearly have more skill so make moves that don't occur to me. Half the time I'm wondering how on earth I got into that position

I'm surprised at how much more 'solid' my play seems to have become simply by introducing a few of those principles Meglet.
It's almost like: there you go, you've come flying out and you've found nothing substantial to attack. Oh look, you've left loads of holes right through your own defences and your queen and king will now be chased around the board into submission ...
Obviously the above is only relative to the inexperienced players I'm taking on at my level BUT it's given me so much more confidence that I'll be able to put up a good fight from the start, instead of finding myself on the back foot and feeling as though I'm chasing the game all the time. Which is where I'd find myself every other game.
