I don't keep records or lists of what I see but I checked in my work diary and found I heard my first chiffchaff last spring on March 25 (there's a patch of scrub on the way into Huddersfield that's always good and I remember hearing one there on te way to a customer up the road). Ten days to go! ![]() |

I heard what I would normally recognise as a lapwing this morning here on the farm in the Midlands, my doubt is that I have never heard one here before in 40 years. Have I had my ears closed for 40 years or is this unusual? ![]() |

I reckon you've just been unlucky D2. According to the "Bird Atlas, 2007-2011" Lapwings were confirmed breeding all across the midlands as well as most of England and Eastern Scotland. The reduction in Lapwing numbers over the last forty years has resulted in it being lost as a breeding bird in south west England, western Wales and western mainland Scotland. It is still the most widespread breeding wader sepcies in Britain and Ireland. So...enjoy hearing that Lapwing again!

If you want to encourage them to breed D2 there is some advice here - rspb.org.uk There is more on the Natural England site I think, but most of what I have seen is about hill farms. |
