I'm fairly certain there was discussion on this thread earlier this summer about a drop in insect numbers. Here's a piece in the Guardian about a halving of butterfly numbers this year. theguardian.com |

I’d agree that I’ve seen far fewer butterflies this year. But would also point out that the Butterfly Survey weekend was one of the wettest I remember this year. I could predict I’d record 0.

Since moving to Moray, I’ve only seen peacocks and a few speckled wood and cabbage whites. Strangely, in March up here, I took some washing off the line and a comma flew out. There are a lot of peacocks though - in my garden every day and always spot them while out and about cycling which is just about every day. When I was a kid in Bristol, peacocks were exotic, tortoiseshells everywhere, red admirals and little blues also in abundance. |

Pretty sure I had a sparrowhawk fly through and sit on the fence surveying next door the other morning.

Six buzzards circling high above my suburban garden. I've sent the cat indoors.

I had a great view of a hovering Kestrel this morning—a wonderful sight.

Disturbed my first owl of the winter last night. In fading light and a failing head torch didn’t see much other than a dusky silhouette.

I saw a few swallows flying along the cliff top today, I thought they'd all left by now.

There’s a field near me where I noticed loads of swallows on my way home from work the first week the schools were back. But none since so gone from up here in north of England.

My last few trips to NF have seen lots of swallows flying round. Getting ready to fly off? |
