Your thoughts please...

We've got a (almost certain) wader on the canal I can't identify. Typical "peep peep peep" flight call, perches on the canal bank like a wagtail (thought it was at first) and loops up and down as people pass, though generally pretty relaxed about passers by. Pale/buff underneath, mid-dark grey on top (it was dusk, so hard to tell), incredibly bright white rump visible when flying, paler outer tail feathers, and, I think, a relatively short, thin bill.

The only thing I can come up with is a juv curlew sandpiper, but that seems unlikely and too early to be fully fledged and out by itself.

Will go back with bins and camera, but for the moment I'm stumped! Any ideas?

Sounds like common sand to me. Curlew sand young usually start head south in August

Familiar with common sand, and I don't think so. Upper very much grey rather than brown and couldn't see white shoulder notch. And perched upright, with no bobbing. Although location and general behaviour would fit. Need to go and see if it's still there.
