Oh dear: bird in my stove! No idea how they get in. Well, through the chimney, but that is no mean feat. Happens every 2-3 years or so, always fledglings. Now to extract without releasing it into the house with the cat 😱 |

Hung one of those half-coconut things out yesterday (filled with marrowfat I think), the local bird population decimated it in one day. I counted nine blue tits on it at one point. Seems that squirrels also like it!

If I hadn’t been on the phone at the time I would have taken a photo of the juvenile sparrowhawk perched on my garden fence this morning.

I think it has fledged, phal? Guessing it's on the IOW? That’s good news jacdaw - I assume they keep it very quiet on purpose as it looks like it’s a new news story on the bbc. |

Yeah, I think they only announced it once the chick was out of the nest.

I was away on Arran for a couple of nights. The field opposite the house hasn't been grazed this year so is overgrown with grasses, shrubs and thistles. I was delighted to see a willow warbler coming over to a shrub by the fence to take insects. It was 2-3 metres away. It even perched on top of the patio door to feed for a magical moment. It really made my weekend. |

Now on way back from Stockholm. Great holiday, although a little disappointing from a bird point of view (was secretly hoping for bluethroats, although haven't even checked if they occur there). Main items of interest, apart from the unidentified birds I mentioned a few days ago, are a mink in the wild a couple of days ago (very dark, very mustelid); lots of tree sparrows in urban if leafy Stockholm (so why not in the UK?); and, somewhat surprisingly, a fieldfare in a park this morning. But of course this is where they spend their summers.

I had a beautiful sparrowhawk sitting at the side of the road this evening eating an unfortunate pigeon. Best close up view I've had of one, I even managed a bit of video. I don't suppose we can post videos on Fetch?

Similarly I watched a blackbird yank out a great big worm and fly off with it. I then interrupted her chosen feed station and she dropped it though quickly returned to get back her meal.
