Hello again Fetchie bird fans. A couple more unusual to me sightings on the canal today. This time, ducks. Nearly all around here are mallards, however today I saw two different which appeared to be a pair. One was mallardy, but with an orange head, which from a lookup makes it probably a widgeon. The other was black and white, generally a tufted duck? Although I never spotted a tuft. However, the markings don't seem quite right. I'd describe them as like those of a typical black and white cat. Ideas?

Unlikely to be a cat, Dvorak, they're not great swimmers.

A pair as in they were together, but sexually dimorphic?

Have you looked up goosanders? The female has an orange head and male some black/white.

Mandarins maybe though that's a stretch I suspect.
