I'm like that with the grasshopper warblers round here. I can hear them a lot, once they arrive, but I don't think I've ever seen one (although I might have done and just not recognised it.)

Gropper is a great example of a regularly seen but not heard species. I value the sbnh birds highly. Cettis another good one

Thanks, I've been looking up my ducks. Not a goosander, not as exotic as a mandarin - in markings maybe like an eider duck, but not big enough.

Our canal has a number of feral and escaped domesticated farm/ornamental ducks of all sorts of different markings and colours so you might not be looking at a wild species at all?

Nor, apparently, are ducks necessarily always picky about their partners and are among the more common hybrid birds.
