There was quite a bit of noise on that lake, so I don’t know that I would have picked out the widgeon. Thanks for that identification DT. I’m not good on waterfowl, so generally everything is a duck!
I was very happy to get a flying shot of the pintail as I haven’t managed to get anything in flight in focus.
It’s also very handy being low to the water so you can’t see the industrial beauty of Middlesbrough in the background.

The usual ones to look out for are teal (smallest common duck) which tend to stick to the margins, widgeon (yellow ‘mohican’ and whistling call; often found out of the water apparently grazing), shoveler (huge flat bill like a shovel), tufted duck (black and white diving duck). Like most birds it’s worth try to learn a few of the most likely to be seen species

Good guide there from DT. I came up with a handy little mnemonic for wigeon when I was learning, as I kept on confusing them with pochard - they're the duck with a wiggy on. I thought of what DT calls a mohican more as a toupe.
