Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

They usually winter on the coast or on estuaries, Hann. Probably just passing through.

Great photo. Strange this should come up today, when I saw the wagtails I was looking thru the bins to see if any curlew were in the fields yet. None here yet, but had a bit of rain and they do start to appear when the fields are damp

No swallows on my run today, did see some oystercatchers back on the beach tonight

Curlews are among my favourite birds! Serious curlew envy here.

jacdaw there’s a group of usually around 300 curlew over winter just east of Ilkley. I used to see them on my daily commute roosting in the fields on late autumn mornings sometimes. But, you’re right overwintering curlew inland are unusual

I'm so used to seeing them here all summer, and then at the coast all winter that I assumed that's what they all did. I think being inland in the coldest months of the winter is going to be hard work for a curlew. Maybe it's different down south!

There’s a bit of a micro-climate in Wharfedale below Bolton Abbey. It’s damp and relatively mild compared with up in the dale proper. I’ve seen the odd oyk there in winter too and they aren’t common inland in the Dales

I don't really remember if tbey are there all year round, a few miles up the road but we are on the river Monnow and not far from the Wye and Severn estuary. I am going to monitor them :)
