First proper sighting today of the parakeets which have arrived here. There's a row of poplars by the river where I thought I'd glimpsed one some months back, and they were there in some numbers, making that distinctive noise (which includes a sound very like a dog's squeaky toy). Have very mixed feelings about these birds, I have to say.

Also, another first for me for that bit of marshland - the distinct sound of water rails.

I'm waiting to go on my run, but I'm fascinated by the sparrowhawk's behaviour. His new spot is sat next to the feeders. Been there twenty minutes so far and tenses up for a hunt every time one of the sparrows or bluetits come in. They see him first and veer off, he's still staying there though. It is either really clever hunting or very naive, not sure which though

After an absence of several months our local buzzards seem to be around again. Do they have different breeding and "living" habitats?

Territory holders will defend territory all year, so presumably breed and winter in the same place.

Young birds could just be dispersing through your area post breeding. Maybe there is enough resource near you to support them through the winter, but not enough to allow breeding; low food density or complete lack of potential breeding sites? Sounds like you aren't in an area that is part of a territory.

You could try to age the birds, to see if they are all young?

Whilst out running today on the Moors about the Upper Derwent Valley reservoirs I put up a very large raptor. First thought was White Tailed Eagle, second thought was don't be stupid but it flew away from me like an Eagle and I just couldn't make harrier fit....
Came home and did a bit of digging and found one of the juveniles released last year in IOW has been hanging around there for the last month and was reported yesterday in exactly the area I was in, so it looks like my first thought was the correct one!

Also had a pair of Hobbys a little further on.

All kinds of birds could breed in Britain’s uplands if it wasn’t for persecution. Great spots ff
