That's a good sport, Dochart.

I had a walk along the river and saw cormorant, sand marrtin, redshank, crow, rook, oystercatcher, woodpigeon, goosander, mallard, blue tit, great tit, robin, blackbird, chaffinch, and a fine looking black-headed gull in full helmet.

I often see mallard ducklings but have yet to see goosander fledglings. COuld it be that I see only non-breeding birds?

ff - although buzzards may only eat dead things, I think they’re quite happy to do a low fly over or talon rake if threatened.
I’ve been buzzed a few times by an annoyed buzzard. Mainly in tree covered country lanes.

And I don’t think any raptor rejects a free meal?

They will um but normally only when they have a nest with young in it close by. We have a lot round here and you only ever hear of incidents at the height of the breeding season. There is one pair in particular that are notorious for it during the breeding season but the rest of the year they're fine.

Slow was saying that they eat worms when we saw it today. I find that so weird. But it would explain why it hangs round here so much, we have a good amount of worms, and judging by the mole hills, so do several if our neighbours!

You sometimes see them stamping on the ground to get the worms to come to the surface. It looks quite comical😀

Red kite, not unusual, but it is this low over the garden. I hope it doesn't fancy chicken!

Coal Tits on the bird feeder today. Totally unbothered by me being out doing some gardening.

Unless your chickens are small and feeble you should be ok Hann. Red Kites have very weak feet for a bird of prey. They can't seize anything of any size or ability to fight. Like Buzzards most of what they eat is already dead, close to being dead or quite small

Thanks FF! I did wonder... It is the goshawk I am most fearful of for the chooks. They are large, feisty and fly quite well. Also, the have an old flattish pig ark to shelter under: wind, rain, sun, year round dust bathing, birds of prey.
