Hmmm... It may not have been feeding on ants, but it was caught by the hawk! So sad when they catch something rare rather than a pigeon... But glad it wasn't a chicken to be honest!

Just surprised that an LSW was so out in the open, and on the ground.

Not out in the open... They live in the woodland around my garden. It is amazing to see how the hawk flies through the trees. I have all three species of resident woodpeckers here!

I run through a nature reserve sometimes and my favourite sound is the Booming of the Bittern.

I was trying to find the video I once saw on a chicken keepers forum... of a goshawk flying into a coop through the pophole and re-emerging with a chicken... Can't find it, this is quite good though: |

Hann, I assume you meant to say collared doves, not turtle? Turtle are virtually non-existent in Wales (I think you are still in Wales?) and don't arrive back anywhere in the UK until late April/May time. The earliest recorded is 11 April and that's down South. |

Yes, Flanker, Tortel duiven. They are indeed collared doves in English. You have to forgive me, this happens a lot to me. We do get turtles as well, but I have only ever heard them... Not seen them. Just to clarify: we have a lot of rare wildlife here, including pine martens and also rare butterflies. I am proud to say that I spotted hairstreaks in my garden for the first time last year, after 8 yeats of creating habitat , that is very satisfying. Barn owl box going up in my new building this year too, as well as some other nest boxes. |

The history of doves in the UK is an interesting one. Collared doves didn't even arrive here until the 1950s, they used to be an exciting rarity and yet now they are ubiquitous. Turtle doves on the other hand have declined by around 98% since the 1970s (April's British Birds journal has an article about them ![]() |
