Fabulous picture Scribs
There’s a great line in one of the Simon Barnes books about someone he knows shouting ‘seagull’ in a hide surrounded by very serious birds

Amazing shot,!
I have both a spartowhawk and a goshawk hunting over the garden. Why I have given the chickens some corrugated arcs to hide under.
I was saddened last year that the hawk had a spotted woodpecker, right by the chicken run...
I get all resident woodpeckers here

LOL @phal That's where the kestrel/sparrowhawk confusion came from. Mr S said 'kestrel' when we saw it from the kitchen, but it was obviously bigger when we could see it closer up.
I often blurt out the wrong bird - nuthatch and treecreeper most often mixed up, or saying what I want to see. Also my brain says 'Fisherking' first every single time...

Scribbler, smashing shot!
Some of you may not know this, but the sparrowhawk/cuckoo similarity is interesting. It's not accidental, but an evolutionary adaptation by the cuckoo. The cuckoo is a brood parasite - it lays its eggs in other birds' nests and gets them to rear its young. So what better way to get access to a nice nest to lay your egg in than to fly over, looking like a sparrowhawk, and scare the parent birds away from the nest?

DT you just need to be in a reed bed hide full of serious birders with phal and Kinky making (very quiet)Boom noises to tempt the bittern out and see how that goes :-). It's better still when the bittern then wanders out across the channel and all the serious lot are so closely attached to their scopes and big lenses that they miss it :~)

Us? NEVER
Especially when you've given up, gone for tea and cake and come back into the hide after about an hour because we'd been few up waiting AND THEN the Bittern turns up and we're the only ones who see it
Making BOOM noises in a hide is a bit like playing 'Bogie' I suppose
OH I Miss being in a bird hide with you guys! Sooooooon *everything crossed*
Interesting to read J2R. Thank you. Makes sense!
