We've only just moved in, so don't know about winter, but only seen a pair, so fingers crossed

Been for a run to try and find a chiffchaff. One I thought I heard in the distance but only sang once, then another possibility that seemed to be going chaff chiff Did see / hear lapwing, curlew, mipit, skylark, oyk, plus two redshank. I heard the redshank flying behind me and as I said to Stef ‘that sounds like redshank’ they flew past us |

Strangely I saw chickens too. Loads of mipits and skylarks, sparrows, huge flock of goldfinch, various tits, ducks, geese, and a great tit sounding very like one ... but still no chiffs. |

We ran over past Top Withins and down by Hardcastle Crags before going back over the Stairs. I thought we’d be nailed on down there in the valley

DT, I'd give you a dozen of 'my' chiffchaffs for the chance to run where you have been running! I found myself completely transfixed by a song thrush singing today. It's not as musical a song as, say, the blackbird, but it's so powerful and, it seemed to me today, joyous (although in reality it's probably just a loudly repeated "F*** off! F*** off! F***off!"). |

DT I've been diverting through any wood I can find but still no joy.

I will be chiff chaff hunting tomorrow... I am sure they are here, just not consciously heard them. Cuckoo soon!
