Don't woodpigeons breed all year round? I'm pretty sure they produce pigeon milk, so as long as they have food, can raise young. They aren't tied to the availability of insect larvae to raise young, in the way other birds are.

I didn't know woodpigeons did that, but I knew feral pigeons did (there was something about it on one of the 'Watches a year or so ago). Explains why there are so many of them about!

Well there you go, I never knew that. That would explain why it was so keen with my messy pruning and taking all the bits I was dropping. Bit like having an oversized, fat robin following you around when gardening

I came to that conclusion too, by a process of elimination more than anything. Used to see them quite a bit down in Cambridge which was probably why it looked familiar but, being out of context, why I couldn't place it. Both chiffchaffs and wheatears at some point around the Centenary Way yesterday. |

Mountain hike today, really struggle with some of the small birds high in the hills. In the Carneddau range which in some ways is similar to high moors. Identified plenty of wheatear and meadow pipits, but what else am I likely to see? I can have a look in my books then and see if I can identify anything for next time.

Skylark is one - a bit bigger and ‘pointy’ looking than a mipit

Snow bunting is another mountain bird to look out for, particularly in winter. Check the call. I heard some fly overhead one November afternoon on the Coniston massif
