Our garden seems to have gone strangely quiet. 2 pigeons seem to be in charge currently, with one magpie coming occasionally and a crow was there yesterday.
However, the starlings havent shown for several days, the sparrows and goldfinch that came with them have never returned. The 2 dunnocks havent been for about 4 days when are normally here most of the day. And the blackbirds have only been visiting very sporadically when are usually here loads.

They are probably all busy feeding young. It’s a strenuous task for many birds who do very little other than that at this time of year

I was able to actually get a view of 'my' cuckoo yesterday, high up a poplar tree in an area where he has been calling every time I've run by recently. I was fascinated to note that he wagged his tail from side to side in time with the 'cuck-oo' call.
2 more cuckoos out on a run today. Seems a good year for them. Also today lots of willow warblers, always a delight. And a Cetti's opened up about 2 metres from me (social distancing!) - bloody hell, they're loud!

Red Squirrel
Tup, going back to post 21411. I checked as soon as I got home as the sparrows were smaller and the one I got a good look at had a brown cap. They were flitting around near water and weren't necessarily a pair although flying around the same bushes. I wouldn't have noticed had they not been quite small and seemed faster flying than the house sparrows around here.

Poor spotting in the harbour today. Trillions of Eider Ducks as ever. A solitary Gannet. A solitary Tern. And the resident crew of cliff nesting Fulmars

I saw a heron on the side of the lough this afternoon. That’s not unusual, but this was the first time I had seen one catch something. It must have been a good 4 or 5 inches long.
