Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Grasshopper warbler singing on my local patch today. I was sat watching a sedge warbler hopping around in a willow overhanging the river when I heard it. Also, cuckoo calling short way away. (Plus usual whitethroats, blackcaps, chiffchaffs).

Nice pictures NE. Must have hung around a while longer though than the one I nearly stepped on two weeks ago! I meanwhile am still waiting to hear if my standing high jump world record will be ratified!

Stunning Yellowhammer today in the woods as you leave Buttermere on the LL100 route. Guessing it will probably be asleep next time I pass that way.

Spotted a spotted flycatcher outside my window. I haven’t seen one for a couple of years.

Took a trip to Hardcastle Crags this afternoon. One brief burst of blackcap song but the bloomin' thing shut up as we approached so never saw it :-( I'm beginning to wonder if they actually hate us?!

Reasonable compensation for the lack of blackcap action included the young of many different species being fed by adults (nuthatch, GSW, chaffinch, coal tit, robin), nice dipper, heron and grey wag on the river, swallows hunting at head height (and I'm not very tall so that's properly low!), and then a beautiful male pied fly who sat on a bare broken branch in full view and sang to us heart
