Red Squirrel
Resident goosander at my local (inner city lake) now. Lone swan has new partner, which is lovely to see. Herons, tawny owl on the lake island and about 7 cormorants in residence all the time. I see kingfishers every time I walk down to the lake now, even when there are quite a few people and dogs around. It's an amazing wildlife haven; although the otters are eluding me.

Plenty of bids singing in the garden this morning, testing my still hopeless bird song identification skills. Definitely chaffinch and great tit, probably dunnock and robin too. Two blackbirds were having a punch up on the lawn.

Dunnock sound like what you might imagine a warbler might sound like if you’d never actually heard a warbler. Robin, kind of watery weak blackbird without the full-bodied plummy notes; maybe think very dilute Shiraz

I have to try and get a recording of a bird singing playing at the same time as the bird in my garden is singing, otherwise I have no hope. If the bird has stopped, I’ve instantly forgotten what it sounded like. It’s annoying not having an ‘ear’ for these things.

I’ve probably mentioned it before but the Simon Barne’s Birdwatching with your eyes closed book is good

The robin and the dunnock both very kindly gave me a rendition in view of the window.

I bought the app "Chirp!" in the hope of recognising more birdsong. - It's quite good if you can isolate one song and record that, but usually, something else intrudes and the app gets as confused as I do.

I think I’m going to have to listen to a lot of recordings now it’s that time of year, in the hope that something sticks.

Two robins faced up to each other and had a brief ‘sing off’ on the lawn. It’s all going on here this morning.

I struggle with recordings because often there’s something else in the background and obviously men can’t multi-task
