Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

At my local lake, a small group of large ducks have appeared - with one tiny duckling (in November).

They're brown and white with red knarly bills.

Could they be feral Muscovy?

Red Squirrel, Bristol is obviously a city favoured by owls. I believe there was an eagle owl loose there a couple of years ago, hooting away.

There was J2R. I joined the University as staff and they told me about it. The owl roosted in University grounds.

I seldom see or hear owls of any species and can count the number of occasions over the last fifty years on both hands..but no toes!
This morning with the heavy frost--7 Canada Geese, one Green Woodpecker, Heron, a couple of dabbling Mallard. That's all.

I can’t imagine living outside of hooting distance of an owl or three :(

No owls here. I occasionally see an owl flying across the road a couple of miles away if I finish work late and drive back in the dark. We had short eared owls on the river for the last couple of winters, but only brief visitors.

Stroll along the river today and loads of thrushes finally starting to appear amongst the berry trees. I definitely recognised redwings in large numbers and the other thrushes I'm a bit hazy on recognition. Larger than a redwing with fairly dark pattern on its chest, song thrushes?

I rarely hear owls but I heard one when I was out somewhere a few nights ago.

Out on my bike today I saw a small raptor in a tree, very still. It was brown in colour and had yellow legs. Looking in my book I'm guessing it may have been a merlin or a hobby. I also saw a spoonbill feeding, not sure I've seen one in real life before. :) Then I stopped at a favourite bridge over the river where a family of swans usually are and saw lots of rats having fun on the bank.

Lots of owls shouting around here tonight.

I have noticed that there are hardly any great tits on my feeders at the moment. And no greenfinches, but that is not so unusual. Anybody else noticed the lack of great tits?

@jacdaw, yes, bluetit, coal tits are regulars, even had a fleeting visit by LTTs, but no great tits since the spring very briefly before being seen off by the blue tits.
