It may be hard for them to get a Fresian down the nest hole though.

I've seen lots of kestrel the last few weeks. The result of the very mild winter 2016/2017?

Funny you should say that, DT, I've seen far more kestrels this year than I have for many years. Still very few barn owls, though, and I used to see them all the time. I would have imagined that as they both eat voles, a big vole boom from a mild winter would have benefited both species. Maybe conditions weren't so conducive to the owl hunting style.

By coincidence saw a barn owl tonight on the way back from my 10k race. Only the 3rd of these I can recall ever seeing.

DT: Kestrel by us are very active at the moment. They are also hunting very close by when we are out with the dogs. On Sunday night one hovered then dropped into the grass, emerging with something in its Talons, about 10 metres away.

First walk along the river for a while this morning. This afternoon has mainly been spent poring over images and listening to sound clips of terns.
I am now fairly confident that the terns are sandwich terns, mainly due to their call and the common terns having more colourful beaks.
Was pleasantly surprised to see a curlew wading amongst them as well, not something we get much of at this time of year.
Apart from that, plenty of oystercatchers, cormorants, black headed gulls and loads of skylarks, swallows and house Martins in the fields.
Biggest treat was seeing a cormorant on the river trying to swallow a huge fish. Looked quite comical (unless you were the fish) but it went down in one
