I mean, I have done at least 5 but it seems silly to put me on any list as though I would love to do more, the likelihood of it happening in the next decade is very slim ![]() |

I think I will be forever stuck on 24 given my wretched knees and my ever increasing anxiety about dogs and cows ![]() |

Reading the WW guide earlier there are two paths by Rossett Gill. That steep zig zaggy one closer to the gill that goes between the crags. The one I’ve always taken. He talks about, and doodles, one that goes wider, towards Esk Pike, and is a more gradual climb. But takes in a bit of the rock and scree higher up. That’s the pony path. He recommends using that as the other track is becoming overused by walkers. However that is before Fix The Fells and from what I can see when there I can’t see much trace of that any more. However when I climb that my sole focus is usually one step in front of the other. Not much looking at alternative routes. Maybe one for next time! |

I also don't think there is a trace of it. I recce'd that area with a group from Lonsdale when we were having a stab at the Gerry Charnley and unless you're using the faint trod under Hanging Knotts (ie to the S of Angle Tarn), then you must be well south of the Bowfell massif ....... so that must mean an ascent via The Band, que?

.... actually, I stand corrected there. There IS that path up Oxendale past Hell Gill/Buscoe Sike, so I suppose that's another feasible ascent line. You don't see people using it do you??

It’s not obvious though. I’ve looked at it a few times the past couple of years and it doesn’t look continuous/used enough to remain an obvious path. But looks like a challenge for a shorter day out, maybe in winter with axe and crampons. Back to Rossett Gill, there are paths marked in OS that are direct, but there is little trace of them when on the fell. The angle when approaching doesn’t look inviting. But if you were to go that way wouldn’t be too bad in the dry. The main marked path, although hard, is convenient. |
