I think bagging trig pillars is a commendable pastime, it gets you out and about and definitely takes you way off-piste on occasion. I know what you FF means about trespass though, a lot of them are on private/MOD land and I guess it depends on how diligent you want to be about bagging them. Personally, I know I'll never come close to bagging them so I like Gromit's idea of bagging them within a particular area. I bagged all the Nidderdale trigs for instance and that led me to places I had no idea existed. Oddly, I've never visited the trig nearest my home and it's about 2 miles away - built into a dry stone wall and on private farmland
Gromit - I guess you're on Trigpointing UK? Lots of good info there, though it can be a bit overwhelming. A lot of people take it to extremes and bag other TP references like church vanes and surface bolts (there's one underneath the eastern summit cairn on Grey Knotts), the most dedicated example of this is when people dig for datum blocks, these are pads of concrete that are poured in the vicinity of hill summits (often with a surface bolt) and then covered over, so they're typically 6 - 12 inches below the ground. These guys go out with a spade, find it, take a picture of the hole and then recover it. I'll leave it to you to judge the utility of this

NE not yet looked for an app for ticking off but i stumbled across a series of logging books by Herbet publishing ....... there are books for Yorkshire and another for Northumberland / Cheviots areas too ..... like you say broken down by book its hopefully going to be a nice way of getting me to explore different areas of the Peaks rather than just my usual go to places.

I'm not judging. If people want to go around digging holes on remote hilltops, that's up to them.

Gromit - Harold Street does enable you to log trig points, but it's not as good in that respect at it it for normal hill bagging. T:UK is best for that I think.

I felt obliged to support some of this bagging behaviour with piccies. The first is of a typical surface bolt (as you'd find on Grey Knotts) .... and this is of a datum or surface block. This one is just by a roadside, but it seems they are everywhere. Oddly, it also appears that if there is one, then there is usually another in the general vicinity (an "auxilliary") but I think that's going to be the extent of my research

T-UK only has an app for Android. I've got a rough iOS app I knocked up for club challenges over lockdown (one of which was local trigs) that I'm considering polishing and releasing more widely. This would include some of the more standard lists. It is a bit like the Hill Lists apps, but more challenged based, and I had wondered about offering to hook into T-UK. Similar concerns to ff about encouraging trespass is one of the things making me hesitate. Oh, and the lack of time to finish it
