If I had recurting asthma problems brought on or aggravated by the cold, I would plan my round for the summer, not May, when it us guaranteed still frosty on the tops and snow, hail, sleet storms distinctly likely.

There are so many other factors to take into account. The Lakes are usually wetter in summer, the vegetation higher/thicker, it's hotter and more humid and there are other races (Sabrina is I think in the summer Spine for instance). There are always compromises and in the general scheme of things late April/May is usually a very good time to be doing this sort of thing in the Lakes. The weather (as it has been recently) is often at its most settled, the amount of daylight is good and the vegetation growth hasn't really started. If she had gone a week earlier this year it would have been perfect....

And remember this is someone who successfully ran a winter Spine in January without her asthma stopping her. Sometimes you just get a reaction from your body that you don't expect.

True FF, true. On all counts! When I was training/preparing for my BGR April/May was always the best time. I have had snow on the tops in August... Along with temperatures not reaching double digits...

A friend posted an amazing video of himself skiing off Helvellyn yesterday down to Red Tarn via the "Sugar Bowl" at the back of the corrie. I think he does this often in winter, but probably not so much in May!
