Interesting, sure most of us think we do this already but probably too many double days to make up mileage and not enough tempo runs as you don't often do these at club sessions and they are tough doing them solo. I'll have a few tempo runs in this plan but my whole approach for April will be revised so either a big improvement or epic fail

Tizer, sure myself, iain, beeps and john going to be trying consistent tempo runs through the winter and we hoped to recruit you aswell. It's much easier to tempo in a group!

Finally had time to read your article baz, the one thing i do notice is a lack of racing and then they cram in a few in the last 7weeks but nothing above 15k so a bit shy of half marathon. Also seems a bit light on the long runs but with more medium long runs than we'd probably do. I do like the fact that there's little double days as i struggle fit them in with my working hours. Overall for me to follow a plan like that would be a tough ask and would need a lot of tweaking. For London i'll be cutting back on doubles, putting in longer miles and trying a bit of core shit and more tempos to see if it makes a difference to overall performance in April.

everyone is different, this is just a guide. i guess the racing later on in the schedule helps get the speed in the legs, the racing before that wont have much benefit at all.
doubles do help in my opinion, but thats just mine. but they are no substitute for the longer miles (anything over 17 miles is a long run), longer tempo/mp and the new "lactic clearance" session you will see kicking about now. its what ever works for the runner.
i like the P&D schedules, its a good book. get it if you dont. or read Lou's.

Suppose it would depend what you look to get out of the marathon. To fully commit to the marathon distance and the p&d schedules for the marathon would no doubt impact on the amount club sessions you were able to do unless your able to the weekly schedule a bit. I certainly agree with the long run paces they prescribe and the way in which to run them. I still believe that we run long runs too fast to much of the time and maybe the slowing down of these runs at the start before building pace gradually through the first 5m and holding it untill the last 4/5m where it can be increased again (as mentioned in the article). Also had a wee peak at the 70+m p&d 18week schedule and notice that i've been over running the double days, they don't seem to fluctuate away from 6+4 whereas i've been doing 6+8...maybe that's why i was physically fecked;-)
