Well, it beat the guys running 52/52...

(agree in principle, small +ve split seems to be the received wisdom for 800m)

Not sure the leaders were even 52/52 (no clock to confirm) also would need to check but even if it was 52/52 the first 200-300 looked very fast so they probably cooked themselves then.

Commentary said 52.3 if I heard correctly for the leaders and i think at least one of them also made the finish line tussle, so not far wrong. Difficult to tell how nuts they went at first, but it still took some guts / self confidence to avoid going with the pack for that first 200 / 300.

I watched the 1976 final too, and was interested to note that they ran both the first and second bends in lanes then, breaking only after the 300m mark. Apparently this was done between 1973 and 1976. Would be interesting if they brought that back as it would likely reduce the number of cagey championship 800s where no-one wants to take on the pace. (Though clearly London 2012 was a bit different to that!)
