Nitro Athletics match 1 was shown on BBC2 yesterday afternoon (highlights). Thoughts? For me, the TV coverage was poor, but there was definitely some merit in some of the tweaks, even if it is just breaking down the male / female gender divide in things like relays etc.

Thought the Nitro was pretty good, way better than expected. The mile elimination was entertaining. Encouraging people to attack their PBs is good in PV and LJ. Not sure the handicap system worked too well for the para athletes as the 2 with massive head starts walked away with it.

Would be interesting in the jumps to see if any athletes can get close to or exceed their bests. I've often thought it odd that PVers or HJers are expected to put in their biggest efforts right at the end of the competition when presumably they are more fatigued. Limiting the number of attempts would solve that. (Though for the purist in me, it does change the nature of the sport).
Eliminations were interesting - mens good, womens bad. Shows both sides of how those sorts of races can work. 3 minute run was a little less exciting, but as a challenge for the individual athletes makes for something different.
I've always treated the relays at "proper" meetings as "just a bit of fun". They seem a cheap way to earn medals for athletes who aren't quite talented enough, and as it means only sprinters have that choice I don't really get interested in them.
So adding MD runners into the mix, mixing up the genders and allowing for varied starting orders (Bolt and Powell against junior women!!) met my appetite - a bit of fun, not just limited to sprinters etc.
Wonder if you could get the throwers in there too - event starts with (say) a single javelin (or perhaps a sum of jav, discus, PV and HJ), then the starting blocks are placed at that distance from the first change over line and then the runners "do their thing".
The best thing about it for me was the fact that so many of those events could be incorporated into local athletics meetings. I know so many clubs that perhaps have 2 good male U13 sprinters, 2 good U13 female sprinters etc where putting them in the 4x100m would turn out a much more high quality race than currently where the one or two big teams can always put out a relay squad which will crush the smaller clubs. Ditto for the medley relays which give those kids interested in MD racing something more than just one race, plus then having to do other events that they don't really enjoy.

Agree larkim, I enjoyed the spectacle too. The sport is a bit stale at the moment to the wider general public. Even as a runner I dont watch a lot of athletics - olympics and London Marathon are the only exceptions.
Hopefully Lord Coe can do for athletics what Barry Hearn did for the two 'sports' (lol) of darts and snooker.

video is on a letsrun messagboard thread.
Collapsed on the finish line, form was all over the place towards the end. Outstanding effort.
Male pacemaker though so bit of controversy.
